Letter to Parents/carta a los padres:
Dear Parents of Santa Rosa High School:
I want to introduce myself as your child's instructor. I graduated from Sonoma State's Teaching Credential Program in Spring 2016, with a focus in Social Science. I taught my first year at Santa Rosa High School during the 2016-17 school year. Before being a teacher, I was a tutor throughout college and more recently, served two years with AmeriCorps, where I managed their tutoring program. I have always had a passion for teaching and mentoring youth and I am truly lucky to have it as my career.
As you know, California has resumed in-person teaching. In class, we will practice the skills associated with the Common Core State Standards, which prioritizes the skills necessary to help your child become college- and career-ready. Classroom activities build these skills -- reading, writing and listening -- are at the heart of my instruction. My curriculum focuses on the state-mandated academic content, in addition to the skills necessary to help your child be successful in their adult life. I am confident that given the current challenges we can enrich your child's learning. Although it is a difficult time for all of us, I am committed to providing your child with a exemplary experience.
I invite your participation throughout the school year. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. I look forward to being a part of the SRHS community!
Warm Regards,
NightSnow Vogt

Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is strongly influenced by the ideas of Henry Giroux and Paulo Freire. I am committed to critical pedagogy, which seeks to convey important knowledge, and also encourage students to engage in civic engagement that transforms the injustices which persist in our society. I aim to teach students how to be conscious actors in our society, how to recognize injustice and how to correct it. I acknowledge that educational goals should be relevant to the community we serve, and encourage students and families to play an active role in shaping these goals. I disagree with the premise of education that states, “We lead, and you follow.” Instead, I believe education is a collaborative endeavor embarked upon by a school and its community.
The best historical curriculum to support this general philosophy is one that emphasizes both global and local awareness and diversity. This focus helps students “turn outward, toward the talents and accomplishments of all groups” and “place one’s ethnicity in the context of our common culture.” It is my goal to not simply study these subjects, but to actively question how this knowledge was socially constructed and explore who it has empowered. I believe a balance between knowledge and skills provides opportunities for students to explore this meaningful narrative, and will hopefully serve as a touchstone for a lifelong love of education.
I value a horizontal classroom where teachers and students have the ability to learn from one another. This discourages an environment where teachers have all of the knowledge and authority. Teachers don’t have a perfect understanding of the reality of our student’s lives; we must also rely on students and their parents to share their knowledge and skills. This educational approach will be guided by the dual concepts of the “language of possibilities” and “problem posing.” In “language of possibilities,” students engage in discussions that “emphasize that social change is a product of human action and to empower people to see themselves as being able to change the course of history." In “problem posing,” students explore real life problems in the communities of our students, and empowers students to positively transform it. Both of these principles focus on practicing communication and wielding it in such a way as to contribute to the community.
Finally, I believe parental involvement is vital to the success of our educational system. I encourage the parents of my students to help with schoolwork, limit screen-time, develop relationships with teachers, and maintain the physical space for their students to study. Parents can also play an important role in creating a safe learning environment. I strongly encourage students and their parents to contribute to the construction of knowledge in our classroom. This will bolster the democratic culture of our classroom and society in general.
